According to a Gallup poll, almost two thirds of US adults reach for at least one coffee a day, with most drinking almost three cups.

But how many of those coffee drinkers are real connoisseurs? Are you?

We can always tell when someone has woken up, smelled the coffee and started to take their tastes seriously - with or without sugar.

Here are the giveaway traits of a coffee connoisseur - see if you recognise yourself…

Seven clear signs you’re coffee connoisseur

1. You understand the importance of origin

You know where your coffee comes from. And by that, we don’t just mean which store. Or even which country. You’ll want to know which region it came from, maybe even which farm.

If you’re a real connoisseur, this knowledge will be important. That’s because your experienced palette can recognise the differences between beans grown in different regions, and between different climatic conditions and different soils. So origin will be a big deal to you.

If you can trace exactly where your beans came from, right back to the slope they were grown on, you know you’ll be guaranteed satisfaction in every sip.

2. You understand that roasting is an art

Coffee roasting is an art and you know that. You can instantly recognize when a coffee has been under roasted or burned, normally before you even drink it.

That’s why you seek out coffees that you know have been carefully processed by hand, in small batches, by experts who are dedicated to their craft.

When you know your beans have been roasted meticulously to protect the integrity of their flavor, you know you’ll be getting a great coffee without compromise.

3. You don’t mind the daily grind

When you get the chance, you love grinding your own beans from fresh as part of your coffee ritual.

To make sure you get it right, you’ve got a burr mill grinder because you know it’s the best tool to get the consistency of ground coffee you need without losing too much of the character.

And when you do go for pre-ground or coffee pods, you always go for traceable and expertly roasted and ground beans for the very best result.

4. You’ll always go for super-fresh

Taste is personal but freshness is fundamental.

You know that your coffee is at its best within a month of roasting, whilst its flavors are still full. That’s why you prefer to buy coffee that’s been recently roasted, so you can get the full impact of the beans.

You also know that air, moisture, heat and light are bad news for your coffee’s delicate flavors, so you keep your beans, ground or pods sealed in a cool, dark place away from the stove and away from steam.

5. You know your water

You’re obsessive about your water temperature and you’ll never use it for coffee if it’s below 92C or above 96C. There’s a chance you’ve even worked out your own ‘perfect’ temperature to a point of a degree centigrade.

You also know how good your local water is and you know what kind of coffee it makes. If your water isn’t ideal, you always filter it first and when you’re not sure you’ll use bottled to make sure your coffee isn’t tainted.

6. You don’t waste a gram

You’re all about the ratios and know exactly how much water to add to your ground coffee to make it just the way you like it.

To get to this point, you’ve spent hours making and drinking coffee and now you’re never entirely happy unless it’s perfect.

That’s why you’ve ditched your scoop and can’t get by without your digital coffee scale so you get the balance just right and don’t waste a gram.

You’ve also realized you can use your digital scale to weigh your water out too, and now you do it with every cup for an even better result. You’re a pro!

7. You know that every great coffee starts with a great bean

Even if you’re not as obsessive as some when it comes to your coffee rituals, we know all coffee lovers agree that a great cup of coffee always starts with an expertly grown and roasted hand-picked bean like Blue Mountain - no matter how you like to make it or take it.
